Challenge coins are treasured collectibles for military units, government teams, corporate organizations and memorial events. While most buyers focus on front & back artwork, coin edge detailing is a premium upgrade that greatly boosts the coin's value and unique character. One popular premium option is laser engraving on coin edges with black enamel filling (laser engraved blackened edge).
What is Laser Engraved Black Filled Edge for Challenge Coins?
The coin edge (the side wall of the round coin blank) can be laser-etched with texts, mottos, serial numbers, quotes or symbols. After laser carving, black paint/enamel is filled into the engraved recess to make the words stand out sharply against the metal surface. This finish is different from standard reeded rope edge, plain smooth edge or twisted rope edge. It adds hidden storytelling elements. As the saying goes on many coins: Every Coin Has A Story, and edge engraving lets you add extra messages that cannot fit on front and back faces.
How the Laser Black Filled Edge Works
After coin die-casting, plating (antique bronze, antique silver etc.)
Laser engrave deep text or patterns vertically on the coin cylindrical edge
Clean engraved grooves
Fill black enamel/ink inside laser cut lines
Wipe excess color off the raised metal surface, leaving dark ink only inside recessed engraving
Cure and QC inspection
